Built for teens who can tell when they're being talked down to.
This is a devotional series for teens who need more than a verse and a takeaway: Scripture, a true story, and a choice that matters now.
The name is the whole idea.
You will always know where a chapter is going: into the passage, into a true story, then into real life.
The passage, told straight.
1 and 2 Samuel with the weight the text gives them: Hannah, Saul, David, Jonathan, Abigail, Tamar, Absalom. No cleaned-up hero stories, no soft-focus Bible-study voice.
A story students can check.
The modern stories are real, not illustrations made up to force a lesson. Readers can check the facts and decide what they think.
One concrete action today.
We do not end with “be better.” We name the trap, then offer one honest action for today.
How we handle Scripture.
The three commitments underneath all 48 chapters.
ESV throughout
Scripture quotations in the book, the lessons, and this site follow the English Standard Version unless marked otherwise.
The hard chapters stay
Tamar has a chapter. The medium at Endor has a chapter. The rooftop has a chapter. Each is told with the weight the text gives it, without graphic detail and without pretending it teaches something tidy.
Scripture-first, always
What students see stays anchored in the passage. The deeper pattern language some leaders want lives in Leader Notes, written for the adult in the room.
Readers 13 and up, and the adults behind them.
The books are written for teens 13 and up. Samuel includes hard material, and this series does not pretend otherwise; younger readers may do well with a parent alongside them.
The teaching layer
Every chapter has a free, print-friendly basic leader sheet with Scripture, discussion, and one concrete next step. Detailed plans, scripts, slides, and worksheets are there when you want more support.
A small operation, on purpose.
Teenagers do not tune out because they do not care. They tune out when they cannot see why something matters to their lives—or what difference it could make today. Roots & Mirrors is built from three decades of experience teaching and working with young people, creating devotionals that connect biblical truth with the questions, pressure, and choices teens actually face.
