Every chapter entry below ends with the same three-question ladder. You are never obligated to climb the whole thing. The first question is the whole win; the other two are there if the door opens.
A closed question with a one-word answer. It proves you know what they're reading, which is the entire point. Their answer is your gauge: a shrug means let it rest, a full sentence means there's more there. Either way, you asked. That registered.
A question about the people in the chapter, not about your teen. It's easier to be honest about Hannah or a stalled tank convoy than about yourself. Most teens will tell you what they think about a story long before they tell you what they feel.
An open question with no right answer, only worth asking if the first two felt welcome. Don't fill the silence after it. Silence usually means it landed. If they deflect, take the deflection gracefully; the question will still be there tomorrow.
A few chapters come in pairs, using the same real story from different angles. Those entries include one extra question to help you connect the two.
House rules: this is not a quiz, so don't grade the answers. Side by side beats face to face; car rides are undefeated. One question is plenty for one day. If they ask you the question back, answer it for real; that trade is the whole game. And don't hide the cheat sheet. "The book has a parent page" is a fine thing to say out loud. Teens can smell a script, and visible effort reads better than faked spontaneity.
